《道德經》第十五章原文：
古之善為道者，微妙玄通，深不可識。夫不唯不可識，故強為之容；豫兮若冬涉川；猶兮若畏四鄰；儼兮其若客；渙兮其若凌釋；敦兮其若樸；曠兮其若谷；混兮其若濁；孰能濁以靜之徐清？孰能安以靜之徐生？保此道者，不欲盈。夫唯不盈，故能蔽而新成。
根據我粗淺的理解譯為：
古時專修自然之道的人士，看上去很微妙、通達、深深、神秘莫測，一般的人無法理解。正因為他不能能為平常人所理解，所以我也只能勉強地來形容他們：
他們小心謹慎啊，好像是在冬天踩著冰過河；
他們十分警覺啊，好像在其周邊己危機四伏；
他們嚴肅莊重啊，好像是要準備去赴宴做客；
他們瀟灑自如啊，好像春天正在消融的冰雪；
他們純樸厚道啊，好像沒有經過砍削的圓木；
他們心胸寬廣啊，好像那崇山峻嶺中的山谷；
他們混混沌沌啊，好像一灘深不見底的渾水。
誰能使那流動的渾水靜止，使之慢慢變得清澈呢？誰又能使它長期保持安靜清澈，然后慢慢使它流動起來又變得渾濁不清？從這當中領會到自然之道的精神人，就不會自滿。正因為他從不自滿，所以能夠棄舊圖新。
我用簡單英語翻譯如下：
In ancient times, people who major in the Nature principle looked somewhat strange，successful, profound and mysterious，which the common people could not understand. Just because they cannot be understood by ordinary people, only a reluctantl description about their general image can I give as follows：
So cautious they are, as if they were crossing the river on ice in winter.

So solemn they are，as if they were asked to the party.
So unrestrained and free they are， as if the snow and ice were melting in spring.
So simple and honest they are，,as if the logs had not been cut.
So broad bosom they have，just like valleys in the mountains.
So nebulous thought they have，just like a pond of muddy water.
Who can let the flowing muddy water stop and gradually become clear？Who can keep it quiet and clear water for a long time，and then slowly let it flow，and let it become muddy water again? From this，he who can comprehend the implication will understand the Nature's principle and he will neven self-satisfied. It is because he is never self-satisfied that he can give up the old traditions and try to accept new things.
