How about backpacking ? Maybe you’re too young to do it. But it doesn’t matter. Follow me and you’ll learn about an interesting way to travel.

Have you ever noticed foreigners with big bags on their backs? They wear jeans and T-shirts, and have guidebooks or maps in their hands. They look curious ?about everything they see. They enjoy themselves without a tour group. That’s right! They are backpackers.

Backpacking is a popular way for Westerners to travel outside of their country. It’s cheap so that people can travel more and see more places. Most backpackers are young people because backpacking needs a strong body, courage and freedom.

Backpackers usually do some homework before setting out. They search for information about their destination country: food, fun places to visit, hostels and things to buy. They are sure they know how to change planes or where to get the train.

Backpacking is a freer way to travel. You can change your destination whenever you want. It also allows travelers to explore and see more. And you can decide how long to stay there. If you go with a tour group, there may be a lot of rules and you may not be free to do things as you like.

The Booming B&B

What is B&B? A B&B is normally a private residence , several rooms of which are set aside for overnight guests whose paid accommodations include breakfast or it is a small lodging establishment that offers overnight accommodation and breakfast. Generally the guests are self-guided tourists and backpackers who are accommodated in private rooms with private bathrooms and breakfast is served in the bedroom or in the host's kitchen. B&B business originated in UK in early 1920s and quickly spread in the United States Of America after World War II. B&B business was well received in Japan in 1980s (called Minshuku in Japanese) because it could be a secondary source of income for some families who had extra rooms in their farmhouses. China mainland introduced B&B into this country about 20 years ago and it has been booming rapidly. The B&B has evolved in China from simply homestay accommodation with shared bathrooms and simple furnishings to beautifully renovated historic mansions with luxurious decor and amenities. In China, some expatriates remodelled traditional farmhouses or historic structures in the quite picturesque rural areas and opened quite a few rustic boutique hotels with such amenities as SPA and beauty salons. Mostly patrons are wealthy businessmen as the room rates are unaffordable for the low-income consumers. Some smart local farmers have also found that this is a lucrative market and have restored their farmhouses into B&Bs in collaboration with business people. Many B&Bs created a historical ambience by adapting historic properties as guesthouses decorated with antique furniture. They are as matter of fact fancy hotels. But they still use the name of B&B because they can profit from the name.

Travellers staying in B&Bs can have an opportunity to learn about the day-day life and culture in the rural part of different regions and try fresh and organic farm products.
